Muchas gracias to readers who voted in our latest poll to find out "Why haven't you signed up for ScoopFree's Litter Tray Home Delivery Service?"

By far, the most votes went to the answer about free shipping. It seems most people didn't know that when you are signed up for our home delivery subscription service, every litter tray delivery is "free shipping." Well, now you know! You can sign up only at
ScoopFree.com (or call us at 888.726.MEOW (6369) during business hours).

Other votes were spread across the board. Some respondents even claimed to like driving and lifting heavy bags. We put that answer in just for fun, but it's ok if that's how you get your workout in :)

ScoopMaid User Review: Top Layer Shredded, Box Jammed & Urine Soaked Through

A recent commenter emailed photos to us illustrating her experience using ScoopMaid by LitterMaid with her ScoopFree Self-Cleaning Litter Box. We thought we would share a few of her pics along with an excerpt of her story.

A word of caution: the photos aren’t pretty, so view at your own risk by expanding to read full post...

“Hello, Well whoever posted that 'ScoopMaid’ worked fine for them...well they got very lucky! I recently purchased the ‘ScoopMaid’ cartridge assuming it was ‘ScoopFree’ with a new design, I didn't think much of it until I got it home and opened it, the first red flag to me was the crystals were much lighter in color, so I then compared my old ‘ScoopFree’ cartridge and the new ‘ScoopMaid’ cartridge…”

“… I have two cats and have always been able to use one ‘ScoopFree’ cartridge for between 14-18 days, usually ranging between 60-75 uses. This time was no different, I used the ‘SccopMaid’ cartridge for 17 days, 65 uses. The top layer shredded and resulted in my automatic Box jamming up. Luckily it didn't break it or ruin my carpet, urine also soaked through it…”

We don’t have room to print her full comment here. Go to previous post: "Buyer Beware..." comment by "The Martin Family Life!" for the whole story.

ScoopMaid IS NOT made by ScoopFree!

ScoopFree customers are still calling us to complain about ScoopMaid litter trays, so we feel compelled to write yet another post to clear up the apparent confusion.

Only ScoopFree replacement litter trays are made by ScoopFree (yes, it's that simple!) and have been developed and tested by the original inventors over a 4-year period for specific use with ScoopFree self-cleaning litter boxes (and now our quick-clean manual litter box, ScoopFree Slide).

On the other hand,
ScoopMaid trays are made by LitterMaid, a completely different company. Check out on-line reviews of their products (vs. ours) to appreciate our respective track records on quality. Turns out, most reviewers report a big difference.

We understand how someone could mistake ScoopMaid for ScoopFree. First of all, ScoopMaid trays might now be sold where you originally purchased your ScoopFree litter box and where you previously purchased ScoopFree trays (often on the same shelf where only a month earlier you could find ScoopFree trays).

Secondly, ScoopMaid packaging claims that it's made for use with ScoopFree machines. You have to read the micro-fine print to see that the product is not made by us. What is doesn't say is that we do not endorse this product, and its use with ScoopFree litter boxes may even void your warranty!

We also recently came out with a new innovative litter tray: the ScoopFree 'Free' Tray - called 'Free' because the premium crystal litter is free of perfumes and dyes. 'Free' trays are made from recycled materials, and the trays nest for more efficient storage. Since we just began distribution of this new product, you may not have seen this in your local pet store yet.

Some key differences to notice when shopping for litter trays:

ScoopFree Fresh Step Litter Trays:
  • Outer packaging is purple with magenta accents and ScoopFree logo.
  • Waste trap label is purple with magenta accents and ScoopFree logo.
  • Tray is white with straight edges.
  • Crystal litter is Fresh Step brand with vibrant turquoise blue crystals - see side-bar picture.
  • Available at retailers nationwide and on-line.
  • Home delivery and special promotions available at www.scoopfree.com.

ScoopFree 'Free' Litter Trays:

  • Outer packaging is purple & white with magenta accents and ScoopFree logo.
  • Waste trap label is purple & white with magenta accents and ScoopFree logo.
  • Tray is kraft brown with slanted edges.
  • Crystal litter is pure white and free of perfume and dyes - see side-bar picture.
  • Available at select retailers.
  • Home delivery and special promotions available at www.scoopfree.com.

ScoopMaid Litter Trays (by Littermaid):

  • Outer packaging is blue with yellow accents.
  • Waste trap label is a blue oval with yellow accents.
  • Tray is white with straight edges.
  • Crystal litter is pale blue.
Some differences, though significant to performance, are too fine to spot by casual comparison. See our earlier post for a side-by-side performance test (ScoopFree Fresh Step Tray vs. ScoopMaid Tray) or watch the test on video.

If you happened to have purchased ScoopMaid trays thinking they were made by us, or if you are disappointed with your purchase, you can call the actual makers of ScoopMaid. However, we would prefer that you call us 888.726.MEOW (6369), post a comment, or email us. We'd love to help you find real, authentic ScoopFree litter trays!

Buyer Beware: LitterMaid’s ScoopMaid Fails the Test - on Video

Now that ScoopMaid litter trays have been available for a few weeks, consumers have been weighing in on the tray’s actual performance with the ScoopFree Self-Cleaning Litter Box. Our verdict: ScoopMaid is not up to par.

Complaints include premature odor, urine soaking through the tray, cats rejecting the new litter, shorter lifespan compared to ScoopFree litter trays, and dimensional incompatibility with ScoopFree machines.

To verify what others have been saying, we conducted a simple side-by-side test. We poured equal amounts of water into a ScoopFree litter tray and a ScoopMaid litter tray, waited 15 minutes, and observed the results.

ScoopMaid trays had saturated edges (water had soaked through all the way through to the bottom of the tray), and the coating on the inside of the tray had begun to wrinkle and peel off. In contrast, Scoop Free trays were dry with no changes to the tray surface.

See for yourself! A video of the test is now on You Tube, or click on this link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KWg8MLKt2Ew.

Now imagine, if this much damage was done by water after 15 minutes, how can ScoopMaid trays withstand the daily litterbox habits of the average cat?

Our recommendation is simple...
Use ScoopFree Litter Trays with your ScoopFree Litter Box.

Thanks to those of you who posted about your own experiences. Please keep sharing your valuable comments. And call or email us if we can help you with a specific issue: 888-726-MEOW(6369) or help@scoopfree.com.

Warning, Imposter Tray!

It’s Monday morning, and we’ve heard that over the weekend, some Petsmart stores have begun to offer a new type of litter tray. If you see a tray called “ScoopMaid,” here are a few things you should know:

1.) This tray is not manufactured by us. It is made by Littermaid, a company with which we have no affiliation.

2.) We do not endorse the use of ScoopMaid trays (or any other products not made by us) with ScoopFree litter boxes.

3.) We have not yet seen one of these trays, but based on the complexity of our product line, we have concerns about the quality of ScoopMaid trays. It has taken us over 4-years to fine tune the mechanics of our litter boxes and trays, which appear deceptively simple. However, we’ve learned that even the slightest tolerances can impact performance in a big way. In addition, Littermaid’s past track record on quality gives us pause. The last time Littermaid introduced a new litter box in the US, their star ratings on many on-line retail sites substantially decreased.

4.) Because we can’t vouch for the quality of ScoopMaid trays (or other trays not made by us), please understand that we cannot honor litter box warranties when used with third-party trays.

In addition, we currently have a pending patent on our tray design and feel that ScoopMaid is an unsanctioned copy. We are disappointed that some manufacturers and retailers are not respecting our pending patent.

Do not accept an imitation! ScoopFree continues to produce and distribute our own litter trays. Per previous post, ScoopFree trays are still available at many retailers including Petco, Meijer, Pet Supplies Plus, Petland and many others. They are also available on our website: www.scoopfree.com.

Where’s My ScoopFree® Tray?

Probably the easiest way to address this question is to answer, “Where isn’t my ScoopFree tray?” Unfortunately, despite widespread popularity and consistently strong sales, our litter trays are no longer available at Petsmart. The result is that many cat owners who use our ScoopFree Self-Cleaning Litter Box cannot find replacement litter trays at their local pet store.

Rest assured that ScoopFree Litter Trays are still available at many national and independent retailers including Petco, Meijer, Pet Supplies Plus, Petland, Jack's Aquarium & Pet and many others. Trays are also available on-line at many ecommerce sites including Amazon.com and through us directly at www.scoopfree.com.

Call us at 888.726.MEOW (6369) during business hours or visit our website www.scoopfree.com and click on “store locator” link to search your area.

We're working diligently to make finding litter trays more convenient. Please send us suggestions for new retailers. We’ll keep you posted here whenever we add another store to our list.
