ScoopMaid IS NOT made by ScoopFree!

ScoopFree customers are still calling us to complain about ScoopMaid litter trays, so we feel compelled to write yet another post to clear up the apparent confusion.

Only ScoopFree replacement litter trays are made by ScoopFree (yes, it's that simple!) and have been developed and tested by the original inventors over a 4-year period for specific use with ScoopFree self-cleaning litter boxes (and now our quick-clean manual litter box, ScoopFree Slide).

On the other hand,
ScoopMaid trays are made by LitterMaid, a completely different company. Check out on-line reviews of their products (vs. ours) to appreciate our respective track records on quality. Turns out, most reviewers report a big difference.

We understand how someone could mistake ScoopMaid for ScoopFree. First of all, ScoopMaid trays might now be sold where you originally purchased your ScoopFree litter box and where you previously purchased ScoopFree trays (often on the same shelf where only a month earlier you could find ScoopFree trays).

Secondly, ScoopMaid packaging claims that it's made for use with ScoopFree machines. You have to read the micro-fine print to see that the product is not made by us. What is doesn't say is that we do not endorse this product, and its use with ScoopFree litter boxes may even void your warranty!

We also recently came out with a new innovative litter tray: the ScoopFree 'Free' Tray - called 'Free' because the premium crystal litter is free of perfumes and dyes. 'Free' trays are made from recycled materials, and the trays nest for more efficient storage. Since we just began distribution of this new product, you may not have seen this in your local pet store yet.

Some key differences to notice when shopping for litter trays:

ScoopFree Fresh Step Litter Trays:
  • Outer packaging is purple with magenta accents and ScoopFree logo.
  • Waste trap label is purple with magenta accents and ScoopFree logo.
  • Tray is white with straight edges.
  • Crystal litter is Fresh Step brand with vibrant turquoise blue crystals - see side-bar picture.
  • Available at retailers nationwide and on-line.
  • Home delivery and special promotions available at www.scoopfree.com.

ScoopFree 'Free' Litter Trays:

  • Outer packaging is purple & white with magenta accents and ScoopFree logo.
  • Waste trap label is purple & white with magenta accents and ScoopFree logo.
  • Tray is kraft brown with slanted edges.
  • Crystal litter is pure white and free of perfume and dyes - see side-bar picture.
  • Available at select retailers.
  • Home delivery and special promotions available at www.scoopfree.com.

ScoopMaid Litter Trays (by Littermaid):

  • Outer packaging is blue with yellow accents.
  • Waste trap label is a blue oval with yellow accents.
  • Tray is white with straight edges.
  • Crystal litter is pale blue.
Some differences, though significant to performance, are too fine to spot by casual comparison. See our earlier post for a side-by-side performance test (ScoopFree Fresh Step Tray vs. ScoopMaid Tray) or watch the test on video.

If you happened to have purchased ScoopMaid trays thinking they were made by us, or if you are disappointed with your purchase, you can call the actual makers of ScoopMaid. However, we would prefer that you call us 888.726.MEOW (6369), post a comment, or email us. We'd love to help you find real, authentic ScoopFree litter trays!

  1. Oh my PetSmart is telling customers that there was a problem with ScoopFree and that's why they aren't carrying them any more. I am glad I decided to check out what is going on. I HATE the ScoopMaid ones. They are HORRIBLE! They are stinky and don't last more than a day or two. Yuck!! I want my ScoopFree!

  3. I work at PetSmart and I never understood why we started to carry ScoopMaid litter trays instead of the real litter trays made by ScoopFree. I hate the ScoopMaid ones they don't work and I hate telling customers they work for the box because I know they don't. I just want to know why stores stopped selling the real trays and where I can buy them without having to buy three or six at a time

  4. I have used 3 of the ScoopMaid trays. They are similiar but I quickly began to notice a definite difference. NO ODOR CONTROL AT ALL. I change the box more frequently than before and it's just gross after a few days. I had been so happy with my new litter box until this happened. I am glad to know that Petco in my area carries them. I hope the legal issues are resolved soon so I can get them at my old pet store again. The ScoopMaid trays are an inferior product. They make ScoopFree look bad. Perhaps that was their intention.

  5. I was using the Scoop Free product until PetSmart stopped carrying it. Then I was forced to try the new Scoop Maid product. It STINKS literally, the urine leaks through, my cats scratched the bottom of the box and it fell apart. This product is inferior and I only get to a 30 count on it when with Scoop Free I had average 55. I will order direct from Scoop Free!!! Don't be fooled the Scoop Maid product is AWFUL!!!!

  6. I thought I was losing my mind! I kept replacing these vile smelling replacement trays, thinking they were Scoopfree, only to be told by Petsmart that people relly like this brand (scoop maid) No one told me it was a different company. As a result Petsmart has lost ALL my business. I dont trust a store that has no brand loyalty or much respect for their cutomers or pets to carry a product (scoopmaid) that has to steal a superior products branding look rather than supply a decent product. Im thoroughly disgusted Thank you SCOOPFREE for your fine product and so happy Petco carries it .
